Ananda Spa and Clinic - Panchakarma

Full, traditional Panchakarma therapy consist of a series of sequential, systematic treatments that eliminate impurities & excess doshas from every cell of the body.

There are 3 phases in Full Panchakarma:

1. The Preparatory Home Phase - Snehana & Virechana
2. The Clinical Phase - Cleansing & Healing
3. The Follow Up Home Phase - Maintenance Advice

The Preparatory Home Phase is done at home and usually begins about 7 to 10 days before coming to the clinic for treatments.

Ayurvedic Consultation
All clients having Full Panchakarma therapies first have a consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic consultant.
During this consultation clients receive their individualised Panchakarma treatment programme, their instructions for the Preparatory Home Programme and some simple & natural health recommendations about diet, daily & seasonal routine, herbal supplements and exercises to suit your mind/body type.

A light, easily digestable diet is prescribed during this home phase to nourish the body and prepare for the elimination of toxins, or ama as Ayurveda calls them.

1. Snehana - Inner Oleation Therpay
Impurities typically are stored in fat cells, where they can remain hidden for decades. To flush them out, Panchakarma begins with a form of inner oleation therapy called Snehana, which usually takes 4 days.

During this time, consumption of oils, fats and calories is reduced. In Ayurvedic terms, we are temporarily putting out "agni", the digestive fire.

Snehana starts with taking some ghee - or herbal sticks if you prefer - for 4 mornings in a row. The ghee acts like a sponge, it gets into every cell of the body, attaching itself to the ama and thereby absorping the toxins. Ghee softens and loosens the ama so that it can be removed easily during the treatments that follow.

Virechana
After Snehana a mild laxative is taken on day 5 or 6 to sweep the intestinal tract. This is called Virechana and it's very balancing for Pitta Dosha, which is centered in the stomach, liver and pancreas.

2. Clinic Phase
After Virechana, the luxurious Clinic Phase begins. Full Panchakarma therapies take about 3 1/2 hours per day. In the West, the average Panchakarma treatment lasts about 5-7 days but it can be done much longer than that - even 1 month on end. Panchakarma is most effective when done regularly - at least once a year to prevent disease and maintain a balanced, healthy life.

A typical Full Panchakarma Therapy Day lasts about 3 1/2 hours and includes:

an Abhyanga: a full body massage. Abhyanga mobilises the ama (impurities) and gets it circulating in the blood stream, ready to be eliminated.

a Svedana: a hot, herbalised steam bath that eliminates toxins through the pores of the skin and the sweat glands.

a Basti: then a gentle, very effective bowel cleanse called a Basti is given to eliminate impurities from the intestines. The slightly bigger Shodana Basti is given the next day, removes impurities situated all over the body through its powerful drawing and eliminating effect. It contains special herbs, oils and other ingredients to draw the impurities out and nourish the bowel at the same time.

ANANDA Clinic offers many more beautifully relaxing treatments to choose from, but this programme forms the basis for the powerfully cleansing, rejuvenating and healing benefits of the Full Standard Panchakarma Programme.

3. FOLLOW UP HOME PROGRAMME
When our clients go home, they continue with the Follow Up Home Programme. During their Ayurvedic consultation and clinic phase, clients will have received many tips and advice about their diet, their daily routine, which herbs to take, which exercises to do for their mind/body type and they'll have been given our delicious Ayurvedic recipes to try back at home.

Armed with these simple, natural remedies that promote balance and well being, clients can continue their healing at home and keep on progressing towards better & better health in their daily lives.
